Stump up for Trees - 3000 trees

It was one of the most enlightening meetings, to fall into the arms of Stump up for Trees, an ethical tree planting organisation based in South Wales. We met them while supporting Home Hill Farm community tree plant, much like we were to be hosting 6 months later, on their new plot of land further up the Wye Valley. The vibe of the event was so empowering and community spirited, of course iI loved it. We learnt the way of planting bare root stock saplings and played are part in setting new trees up for a good start for Pete and Lily.

The Stump team were so positive about our mission to plant trees at Awen Bach and as we were a little bit concerend with all the paper work we would need to fill out to go through a governmernt fund, Stump seemed the perfect organisation for us. They took care of everything.

If you dont know about Stump up for Trees, their mission is to plant one million trees in South Wales and the Bannau Brycheiniog, whether on mountain side or small holdings like ours at Awen Bach.

Stump has visited us 5 times now, helping us to plant the trees that will become our layed hedge rows, coppice woods, woodland extentions and silvo pasture. With a few extra visits that have extended or tree collection into a black locust grove and black poplar population, including a rare female, which we are super honoured to be a custodian.

Our first autumn we visited their tree growing outdoor office / Community Nursery in the Monouthshire countryside. We wanted to voluteer to help dig up the trees that would become our life long companions. See where they came from and be part of the whole process of their journey.

A week later they came with volunteers to start with our first plant. 22 volunteers and Stump staff spread like ants across the land with bags of trees and slender bare root planting spades. Their enthusiasm was infectious. The planting of thousands of trees were laced with warm and insightful conversation. It was a delight and an honour to spent time with a group of people who loved nothing more that to spend time way from their other worlds and plant trees in their time off.

This started a friendship and a connection we with have with them for the first 7 years of the trees life on Awen Bach. Lets hope it lasts longer.
